Igus launches 130% stronger offshore energy chains with new separators

The holding forces of the separators are now 130 per cent greater than those of the usual locking separators of the E4.1 series. The motion plastics specialist has thus supplemented its extensive product range of safe, low-maintenance and energy-efficient systems in the offshore area, enabling customers to improve the technical performance of their systems and considerably reduce their costs.

In order to move several cables and hoses safely in an energy chain, separators within the individual chain links help to keep the cables and hoses securely in position. In applications where heavy or stiff cables are used, as is frequently the case in offshore applications or on vessels, considerable force is exerted on the separators. "We developed the new locking and clamping separators to provide more safety in this context", explained Harald Nehring,
responsible for e-chainsystems at igus. "They can be positioned precisely and fastened to the chain link and cannot be removed without the chain link or separator being destroyed." This also ensures a high degree of loss prevention.

Highly Abrasion-resistant plastic for less weight and more safety.
Injection moulding is used to make the new locking and clamping separators, which are made of the same highly abrasion-resistant plastic that the rest of the energy chain links consist of. "The solutions made of our high-performance plastic are much lighter and  easier on the cables than systems with steel chains", said Harald Nehring. "For improved stability, the two available sizes of the new locking and clamping separators are 63 per cent and 78 per cent respectively heavier than the standard locking separators. However, in relation to the total savings of several metric tonnes compared to steel chain systems, this is hardly significant." Due to their robust and corrosion-free, the energy chains from igus are very suitable for use in applications involving high humidity or in contact with oil and grease. In the maritime area, for example, from ships to oil rigs and offshore wind-power stations,  igus has been offering safe and reliable customised solutions for more than 20 years, whereby users can achieve weight savings of up to 50 per cent compared to steel chains. At the same time, the users are supported by an experienced partner who supplies complete solutions from a single source and who is there to help them in their work all the way from planning to implementation.

igus introduces 40 percent lighter cables for e-chains

The new chainflex motor cables CF430.D and CF440 (unshielded and shielded) from igus save significant system weight for long travel applications using energy chains. In this way, the use of smaller e-chains can reduce cost and enhance both the energy efficiency and the service life of energy chain systems. As for all chainflex cables, igus offers a unique 36-month warranty for its durability.

Whether in plant construction, mechanical engineering, cranes, ships or conveyor technology, the travel distances in dynamic applications are becoming increasingly longer whilst speeds and number of movements are rising. This leads to ever increasing stress on cables that are constantly in motion. The motion plastics specialist igus has developed extremely lightweight single core motor cables for energy chains for long travels, the chainflex types CF430.D and CF440. By the use of a special stranded conductor, the cables are up to 40 percent lighter than standard copper cables. Depending on the cable length and cross-section, the savings potential of the new motor cables can be up to several tonnes, offering a considerable saving on required drive force.

Material combination gives numerous advantages
"This weight reduction is possible by the use of a stranded conductor made of the special material CCA," explains Rainer Rössel, head of the chainflex cables division at igus. "Here, the cable core is made of lightweight aluminium coated with copper, known as copper-clad aluminium or CCA." The combination of these two metals has a number of advantages. Compared to solid copper cables, the CCA cable benefits from the lower density and thus the lower weight of aluminium. When compared to a pure aluminium conductor this one offers the big advantage that the cross-contacting is ensured by the copper coating. Furthermore, the copper layer also contributes enormously to the durability of the entire conductor with a stranding structure optimised for the constant bending in the energy chain.

igus introduces 40 percent lighter cables for e-chains

Developed for use in e-chains
igus has created a special stranding method for its CCA lightweights, and the insulation jacket material has been further enhanced for use in energy chains. igus has already demonstrated the long service life in operation in their own test lab. The chainflex CF430.D and CF440 types have already completed more than 17 million strokes without failure in continuous movement. And the marathon test continues to run. The outer jacket is made of a high-quality mix of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) makes them extremely resistant to abrasion and bending, making them ideal for extremely high loads even at low temperatures and for outdoor use. These cables, designed for very long travel lengths outdoors, can be ordered as shielded or unshielded options. The cables are also resistant to UV and ozone.

New igus plastic guide trough which keeps energy chains safely and easily on track

New igus plastic guide trough which keeps energy chains safely and easily on track

The motion plastics specialist igus has launched a new modular guide trough system, which is entirely made of tribo-optimised plastic: guidelite plus. The system is very light, easy to install, cost effective and is also suitable for use in harsh environments.

Guide troughs, usually made from aluminium or steel, ensure correct operation and a long service life for energy chains in gliding applications with long travels. The new guidelite plus from igus is a guide trough that is made entirely of plastic and is easy to assemble. Individual elements made of abrasion-resistant high-performance plastic can be connected together very quickly and without tools by hand due to a locking mechanism specially designed for this system. The low weight of the plastic parts helps with installation, but is also advantageous where lightweight solutions are needed. A special expansion joint, which is provided in every second link of the trough elements, guarantees flexibility and adaptability especially in case of large temperature variations. Thus, the product can also be used without restrictions in outdoor applications.

Plastic for harsh application areas
The plastic guidelite plus guide trough is also suitable for applications where metallic alternatives are very expensive or cannot be used due to aggressive chemicals or risk of corrosion. For these applications, the guidelite plus can be manufactured from a special plastic that is more resistant to chemicals. Thereby new applications are possible in the galvanising sector or fertilizer production, where expensive stainless steel solutions were previously required. But even in other dynamic uses, in which long travels have to operate reliably without failure or maintenance at a low speed of up to 1 m/s, the guidelite plus is an alternative that saves time and cost. In purchasing alone, double digit percentage savings are possible compared to aluminium or stainless steel troughs.

The plastic guide trough is available for energy chains with outer heights of 35, 50 and 64 millimetres. The use of guidelite plus is economical in both new installations and retrofitting of existing plants. Much cheaper than a comparable stainless steel or aluminium trough, the user saves twice, in the purchase as well as the fast assembly.

igus launches new cable reel options without slip ring

The motion plastics specialist has added two new versions of the cable reel for energy chains to its range with maximum extension lengths from 2 to 25 metres. From stage to marine applications – the e-spool mini and e-spool power can be routed in all directions in varied application areas. Energy, media or fibre optic data cables can be guided together in one system, with continuous end-to-end connection as the space-saving e-spool from igus does not require a slip ring.

In place of the classic cable reel, igus offers the e-spool which carries energy, data and media, all guided together. The rotary motion required to roll and unroll the energy chain is allowed by the twisterband from igus. By using this, no slip rings are required.

For short extension lengths:  e-spool mini
An innovation this year is the e-spool mini for extremely small installation spaces and a maximum extension length of up to 2 metres. An extension and retraction speed of 1 m/s is possible for this very light version, which has an aluminium structure. The chainflex cables from igus, specially developed for use in energy chains, offer the perfect transmission of data, media and energy and ensure a long service life.

e-spool power defies extreme conditions
The e-spool portfolio is also extended in the other direction too. The e-spool power was developed for extension lengths up to 25 metres. Project planning is currently underwayn for customers needing even larger versions and extension lengths up to 50 metres are possible. In contrast to the other e-spool options that use a return spring, a motor is used here, which allows a much longer service life. The e-spool power is supplied by igus along with motor and control unit, and is suitable for outdoor use below 0°C. The rugged plastic components are also corrosion free and withstandeven the harshest conditions at sea. igus has 362 different cables with the DNV-GL offshore approval required for such applications, which makes it easier for you to get the ideal chainflex cables for your application.

Igus launches new iglidur X: A plain bearing material withstands temperatures from -100 to + 250°C

The motion plastics specialist igus have been offering a material for the extremes for many years - iglidur X. Pressure, heat, cold, moisture or acids – is no big deal for iglidur X. As part of the igus standard range campaign that covers 113 dimensions, more are being added to the existing 312 catalogue dimensions. All standard sizes of the plain bearing material are thus available from igus within 24 hours.

iglidur X is the perfect material for applications that can be really hot, cold or harsh. iglidur has been designed by igus for extremely difficult environments. These include extreme operating temperatures from -100 to +250°C, even in continuous operation and with aggressive chemicals.

iglidur X provides a significantly longer life in practice
The chemical resistance of iglidur X makes it ideal for use in, inter alia, fuel pumps. Traditionally other plain bearings such as PTFE-coated bearings have at times contaminated the fuel and damaged the shafts. Now the iglidur X bearing ensures a longer service life of the pump. One of the most extraordinary areas of application of iglidur X was in the "Porton Man", a robot used for testing protective clothing in the British defence industry. This was among the submissions for the 2015 manus competition for exciting bearings applications. The rugged iglidur X bearings that withstand the stress of chemical, biological or radioactive materials are applied in all joints of the robot being used for testing the protective clothing.

Igus presents new material iglidur L500 is suitable for, inter alia, fans and electric motors

The Cologne-based igus GmbH has developed its range of plastics for continuously moving applications and is now presenting the iglidur material L500, a specialist for extremely high speeds. The iglidur L500 is a product of decades of research conducted by igus on lubricant and maintenance-free plastics and is of interest wherever continuously high speeds prevail, including electric motors and fans.

With iglidur L500, the motion plastics expert igus has developed a new plain bearing material, which is ideally suited to continuous operation at high speeds and with low loads. It combines extraordinary properties in running and wear-resistance. Continuous rotational speeds of 5 m/s are possible. And it performs even under extreme environmental conditions, such as temperatures ranging from -100°C up to +250°C and media contact. The iglidur L500 is characterised by, among other things, its low moisture absorption and thermal expansion.

The dry-running, wear-resistant alternative to sintered bearings
A solution for applications with high speeds and low loads are often achieved through sintered bearings. For this reason they are often used in electric motors. Due to their structure, sintered bearings are more vulnerable to shocks and edge pressure than solid bearings. In addition, the oil impregnation limits the operating temperature range and is unsuitable for an absolutely dry running. Comparison tests with iglidur L500 and sintered bearings showed that the wear rates of sintered bearings were higher in all driven speeds, sometimes even up to more than five times. These positive material properties of the iglidur L500 allow the lubrication-free operation of electric motors, fans or ventilators, where sintered bearings were previously used. The standard range of RoHS-compliant plain bearings is available from stock from July. Moreover, the material is available from now on for the development and production of customer-specific geometries and bearing solutions.
