The igus plain bearings catalogue already lists more than 12,000 products that are available from stock. More products are added to it, such as the high-temperature material iglidur X in large dimensions from 80 mm inner diameter. (Source: igus GmbH)

The diverse catalogue range has become wider still to offer the right plain bearing for every application. And they are quickly available from stock.

The igus plain bearings catalogue is currently comprised of around 12,000 products. This autumn 117 more iglidur products will be added, which at igus also means offering this item ready from stock. Among other new entries, is the extension of available sizes consisting of the high tech, extremely temperature- and chemically-resistant material: iglidur X six new dimensions from 80 to 120 mm inner diameter. “Until now, there were primarily the ‘standard materials’ iglidur G, J and W300 in these large diameters. Our high-temperature classic iglidur X was missing here,” explains René Achnitz, head of the iglidur plain bearings business unit at igus. The material is suitable for continuous use at temperatures from -100°C to +250°C and has a very high compressive strength and universal chemical resistance. The extension of the standard range results from the requirements of laboratory and practical tests, and also from  direct contact with customers.

Both the high number of catalogue products as well as the steady growth is largely due to the variety of materials offered by igus. The spectrum ranges from the cost-effective iglidur all-round bearings and FDA-compliant bearings, to high temperature and underwater bearings. This ability to offer almost any plain bearing for any situation is also illustrated in the dry-tech sample box, which can be ordered at igus free of charge by visiting www.igus.eu/box. The box is an "offline-analogue" option of the product finder at igus. Thanks to the enclosed overlay cards, the various materials can be filtered according to different criteria such as temperature, chemical resistance or food contact just as in the online configurator. This can then determine the ideal material for the individual application.

Install and forget
iglidur plain bearings do not need external lubrication, making them completely maintenance-free excelling in dry operation. Following the motto “Install and forget”, they reliably operate throughout their service life contributing to the safety of machines. Indeed, the failure costs due to insufficient lubrication alone in the United States, according to the MIT in Boston, are around 240 billion dollars. The service life of the plain bearings can easily be predicted online. The basis for this is drawn from the results of continuous in-house tests at igus for durability, friction and wear in the test laboratory spread over 1,750 square metres. Over 15,000 plain bearing tests are performed every year.

igus launches a new tribo-tape and other new products for the machine tool industry

PM3514-1

PM3514-1
The iglidur tribo-tape for machine guides made of the iglidur V400 material is extremely wear-resistant and withstands temperatures up to 200°C continuously. (Source: igus GmbH)

igus offers products for machine tools that are high quality and also cost effective. The tribo-tape made of a new material, the lubricant-free polymer slewing ring bearing with individually adjustable swivel angle, or the new chip-proof R2.75 energy tube.

"Save money – safe quality": This igus slogan symbolises the provision of reliability in conjunction with cost savings to the customer. Thus product and process costings for machine tool manufacturers should be reduced without compromising on quality. A novelty is the tribo-tape made of the material iglidur V400. The liner is now available in a more wear-resistant material. This withstands temperatures of up to 200°C, is extremely resistant to media and easy to bond. An example of this would be in machine beds; the iglidur tribo-tape provides great freedom in the construction of gliding surfaces.

Protection against chips, dirt and dust – the chip-proof R2.75 energy tube with snap-open lids on both sides
Constructed on the basis of the cost efficient E2 principle (two parts per chain link) made of tribologically optimised plastics, the energy tube of the R2 series also provides, in addition to the advantages of freedom from lubricants and maintenance, protection against external dirt accumulation and flying chips. The contours of the lid are smooth and its curvature and narrow manufacturing tolerances guarantee that there is no accumulation of chips between the stop dogs. At the same time the two-side flip-open lid saves assembly time, since they need not be completely removed to equip the energy tube with cables. Due to the double stop dogs the R2.75 energy tube can absorb high additional loads and handle even long unsupported lengths. The integrated grid also ensures a firm hold of the interior separation, even in side-mounted applications. All cables are effectively protected from abrasion and wear by smooth interiors and modular partitioning systems using snap-on separators.

Ready to install iglidur PRT slewing ring bearings with individually adjustable swivel angle
The ready to install iglidur PRT slewing ring bearings, widely used in the pivoting arms of control panels and screens of machine tools, are now available with individually adjustable angle stop. The angle range is freely selectable and adjustable in increments of 2°. If a subsequent adjustment of the angle is necessary during operation, this can be easily performed by manually converting the stop dogs. The conversion of the variable twist limitation does not require anything more than the manual loosening and shifting of stop dogs and pins. Plastic gliding elements made from the proven igus material iglidur J are used in the slewing ring bearings, so that any external lubrication and maintenance can be fully dispensed with, avoiding machine downtimes. The ruggedness against chips, dirt or dust is increased, since there is no oil or grease for adhesion. For a low-friction operation, the counter-running surfaces of the polymer gliding elements are hard anodised. In addition to the ready to install standard slewing ring bearings, slewing ring bearings can be universally installed by means of special universal gliding elements made of iglidur J; by joining together individual parts, slewing ring systems can be manufactured from an inner diameter of 500 mm to virtually infinite, as desired. The slewing ring bearing with a diameter of one metre constructed on the basis of these gliding elements, depending on the version, can be loaded with up to ten tonnes.

igus launches modular system which guides and protects very small hoses and cables

Photo PM3214-1

Photo PM3214-1
The e-cord micro is made of low friction tribo-plastics with predefined bending radii to reliably move small capillary tubes and cables. (Source: igus GmbH)

Medical machines often contain dosing and pipetting functions which require the constant movement of capillary tubes, which are only a millimetre or so in diameter. In these applications the fragile capillary tubes are often squeezed into a small bend radius which can cause damage to the tubes or blockages in the flow through them. igus has designed the e-cord micro to help in these cases. The system ensures the hoses do not fall within a pre-defined minimum bend radius of 45mm, and are also given some physical protection. The modular nature of the system and the elasticity of the material allows machine designers lots of flexibility when designing moving capillary tubes into the smallest of spaces.

Modular Design
igus assembles the e-cord micro to order, ensuring a perfect match to the required motion and space of the machine. In this way, different movement directions and travel path lengths can be implemented easily and flexibly. The concept for the e-cord micro, like many other igus products, was driven by customer requirements for a novel solution to their specific challenges. By producing a flexible solution, many other applications in different industries can be realised too.

With the new quick release igubal ball and socket joints from igus, the holding force remains constant even after repeated assembly and disassembly of ball pins. (Source: igus GmbH)

With the new quick release igubal ball and socket joints from igus, the holding force remains constant even after repeated assembly and disassembly of ball pins. A click-in mechanism, which can be closed by hand and simply opened with a screwdriver, ensures that the ball pins remained stable and were easily disassembled again at the same time. The ball and socket joint is made of the 100 percent high-performance plastic igumid, which makes it absolutely corrosion-free, requiring no maintenance or lubrication.

"Even when the ball and socket joints need to be released quickly for maintenance in the automotive industry for gas springs, pneumatic cylinders, linkage or sensor connections or even in machine and plant construction, the high holding force of the new angle joints of 300 N always remains the same in the assembled state," explains Thomas Preißner, head of igubal spherical bearings at the igus GmbH. The ball pins that are clipped into the ball and socket joint, are available in plastic, stainless steel or galvanised steel. "For the latter there are also ball pins with internal thread, whereby other components and assembly processes can be saved."

Various sizes or custom solutions available
Currently, the ball and socket joints for ball pins with 8 mm diameter and M5 thread, as well as 10 mm diameter and M6 thread are available from stock at igus - other sizes are already being planned. Customised solutions according to the modular principle are also possible, for example with sealing caps or as coupling rods with customised depth gauge.

Fast, safe and quiet: igus expands the P4 roller energy chain system

The Cologne-based plastics specialist igus has expanded its comprehensive range of P4 roller energy chains system, now offering guide troughs for the P4.80. With it, a complete range of guide troughs are now available for all P4 roller energy chains from stock. Due to its special design, the P4 system can achieve travels of 800 metres or more in a very energy efficient way.

Long travel lengths, high dynamics and high cable fill weights are extremely important not only for crane and conveyor energy supply systems. Speed and acceleration are important even in other sectors such as the automotive industry. For this reason, igus GmbH developed its innovative roller energy chain system which has been providing power and data reliably and safely on hundreds (thousands?) of cranes and other material handling systems for more than 15 years. Rollers made of special tribo-polymers provide a virtually maintenance-free operation. They reduce abrasion and wear of the energy chain considerably thereby increasing the service life of the system. As the coefficient of friction is about 75 percent less with integrated rollers than with the normal gliding contact friction, up to 57 percent less energy is required to drive the energy chain system.

High speed, long distance
The roller energy chain system is constantly evolving. The P4 system is designed specifically for long travels up to 800m, high travel speeds over 10 m/s and high fill weights of up to 50 kg/m. The rollers of the upper run do not run on the lower rollers, but are staggered to run between them. This is also supported by the use of autoglide crossbars with “combs” that keep the energy chain gliding in a straight line. The small pitch and uniform size of the chain links - with and without the rollers - causes the polygon effect to decrease and the chain thereby rolls smoothly and quietly. The chain is also shaped to offer a wide continuous running surface for the rollers to run on.. Guide troughs also assist in the safe and reliable operation of the e-chain. Wear pads integrated into the chain side links ensure a long service life when in contact with the guide trough.

Strong and stable
Achieving exceptional stability at high speeds and accelerations is one of the objectives of the P4 system from igus. The links in the e-chain include a double “stop-dog” system, and tight tolerances allow a low clearance motion which enables high acceleration. The large pin and bore connections in the side links also provide stability, as does the “tongue and groove” design which interlocks the chain links together.  The P4 roller chain is offered with a range of inner widths from 100 to 400 millimetres and inner heights of 32, 42, 56 and 80 millimetres. Three different bending radii for each type ensure flexibility in matching the cable minimum bend radius requirements. The load capacity of the roller chain can be increased further by using extension links to build a wider system. Each extension link can carry up to 50 percent higher fill weight, increasing the overall capacity. A double lock on the crossbar, which can still be opened quickly and easily with a screwdriver, holds the cables and hoses securely in the energy chain, even with large fill weights.

Everything from one source
The P4 system is offered by igus as a modular system from a single source. As a readychain, the roller chain can be supplied as a fully assembled energy chain complete with cables, connectors and equipped with interface components such as floating towing arms and even electronic condition monitoring systems. These are delivered ready for installation together with the trough system. Before specifying the roller energy supply system, the igus installation team design the system, including all drawings and layouts. By working directly with the customer the individual system requirements can be fully met.

In the P4 system the rollers (marked in green) of the upper run do not run onto the lower ones, but are staggered to run through them and supported by comb-shaped autoglide crossbars (also in green). The coefficient of friction when rolling drops by around 75 percent when compared with gliding friction, which enables energy savings of up to 57 percent required to drive the chain. Connect RTGs with energy and data automatically: The e-rover from igus

With the e-rover, igus has produced a system that automatically couples rubber-tyred gantry cranes with an energy chain system. A telescopic arm connects the trough guided energy chain to the RTG. Thus, providing guaranteed energy supply and data transmission through standard and fibre optic cables.

RTG’s (rubber-tyred gantry cranes) are mobile container bridges, which can switch between the container corridors. Usually, these RTGs are fuelled by diesel. To save energy costs and to protect the environment, developments in the past years moved towards electric vehicles that are coupled to an energy supply system once they are in a traffic lane. igus GmbH has developed its e-rover to enable automatic energy chain system connection and disconnection. Thus, allowing energy and data to be supplied safely in cables and fibre-optic cables with Gigabyte speeds. The coupling process takes about a minute, with no limits to the travel speed of the RTG. Once the RTG has been "plugged in" to the energy chain system, the power supply via the diesel mode is discontinued. Currently, cables having a cross section of 180 mm² per phase are feasible.

Image PM2514-1

Balancing of the horizontal and vertical unevenness
The system works via a telescopic arm on the RTG, which can retract and extend. This has two advantages. Firstly, an automatic coupling is possible, and the energy chain in which all media can be routed simultaneously, pulled along by the RTG. Hence, the supply of energy and data is guaranteed. Secondly, the horizontal and vertical irregularities and offsets in the travel path can be compensated. The system is suitable for long travels 800 metres and possibly longer depending on the customer requirements in the container port.

igus products are now RoHS-compliant free from hazardous substances

igus products are now RoHS-compliant free from hazardous substances
Image PM2614-1
Just one example of the variety of RoHS-compliant iglidur materials is iglidur G, which is suitable as a universal material for the most diverse applications (Source: igus GmbH).

The extended EU Directive 2011/65/EC (RoHS II) became valid at the beginning of the year, therefore tightened the permissible limits for hazardous substances in more and more areas. From the 22nd July, products with unacceptably high concentrations, such as lead-containing plain bearings face extinction in the Medical Technology industry. igus offers iglidur polymer bearings as a RoHS-compliant alternative that promises legal and functional reliability to the manufacturer, and safe use and disposal to the user.

Since the mid-1990s, limitations on the use of environmentally hazardous substances were enforced for electrical and electronic devices and their components all over Europe. Steadily tightened guidelines under the abbreviation "RoHS", (Restriction of [the use of certain] Hazardous Substances) set limit values for the use of industrially-necessary but potentially harmful substances such as, chromium, lead, mercury or bromine. With the new RoHS II standard, a maximum value of 0.1% of the total weight is determined for most. Many manufacturers changed their production accordingly in the past, and others must now respond because exemptions, such as for the medical and control technology, will expire this month. Since similar regulations are also put in place in countries such as the USA, Japan or China, these standards must be met increasingly with a global perspective. However, metallic composite bearings often have alloys that are not compliant with RoHS.

Reliable planning and amendments with iglidur plain bearings
Customers, who consider the RoHS compliance, have an immediate alternative with iglidur bearings. This is because the substances covered by the Directive basically have no role to play in this material made of thermoplastic compounds. Based on the principle of dry lubrication, the iglidur bearing technology uses tribologically optimised base polymers, solid lubricants and fillers of exclusively non-metallic and RoHS-safe ingredients.
The provisions of the RoHS Directive are also subject to permanent review and thus there is the possibility of future revisions of the legal requirements. Manufacturers, whose equipment and components today fulfil the admissible limits, or are even excluded from the standards today, must expect a further tightening. iglidur polymer bearings provide planning reliability today. In addition to their “traditional” advantages of freedom from maintenance and lubrication, all igus products are without hazardous substances. RoHS compliance is therefore one of the natural features of iglidur plain bearings. The igus plain bearings are safe not only in terms of laws and regulations. By the option of life prediction and configuration using online tools, all metal bearings can be replaced quickly and easily by iglidur plain polymer bearings.

igus Introduces ‘Slide and Roll’: drylin W hybrid bearings

Wherever manual sliding applications are situated, for example on machine sliding guards, safety doors, control panels, and theatre stage actuation. Quiet operation without the requirement for lubrication is entirely possible with the drylin W hybrid system.

The hybrid carriage from igus on the drylin W rail profile, made from hard anodised aluminium, utilises the advantages of sliding and rolling ,since they are lubrication-free and can simultaneously move larger loads without excessive driving forces. This space-saving technology with only one guide rail is, for example, suitable for the adjustment of sliding doors or enclosures and allows for maximum freedom at the design process. They enable an easy manual adjustment with very quiet running.

The drylin W hybrid carriage is also available in a compact design with a length of only 90 millimetres. Thus, designers can minimise the impact of introducing a linear slide by using the hybrid system. At the same time, the overall structure remains inconspicuous, even here, since it does not require a second guide as support. As in the case of the larger version, the roller guide is secured on the rail, eliminating the risk of carriages leaving the rail.

Versatile applications through freedom from lubricants
Like all plain bearing products from igus, the drylin W hybrid carriage does not require lubricating. This makes them, on the one hand, suitable for applications in the food and packaging sector, as there is no grease or oil to contaminate the food. On the other hand, they can also easily be used in adverse environments, such as in machine tools. No dirt or dust particles can accumulate on the bearings, which could hinder long-term operations. More sizes will be available soon.

Igus introduces versatile construction kit for robotics

At this year's Automatica, igus presents its innovations, which move robots reliably and extend their service lives. The products on show range from 3D energy chains to retract systems or specially developed cables for robot applications - igus presents products that give customers the ability to configure optimised, low-cost solutions for their applications. Using the appropriate tools from igus, these can be configured quickly and easily.

igus is showcasing its products for the robotics industry at Automatica in Munich. These include the triflex TRCF energy chain designed specifically for multi-axis systems. This three-dimensional chain consists of a completely enclosed system. The unique feature of this robot chain is that it can be quickly opened and filled at the same time, with the flip-open mechanism enabling chainlinks to be opened quickly and easily with a screw driver. This approach allows even large filling diameters to be inserted in record time, therefore triflex TRCF is suited for applications with dirt and chip exposure. trfilex TRCF 85 is now available as a new version with a nominal diameter of 85 millimetres and - as is customary for 3D robot chains from igus - with defined minimum bending radii and torsion stop dogs. This guides and protects hoses and cables reliably in the interior. A rugged stop dog system also ensures high strength. trilex TRCF can be shortened and extended as needed. Accessories, such as mounting brackets and protectors are also available.

Know more about energy chains at: http://www.igus.in/energychains

Compact triflex RSE retract system
The compact triflex RSE retract system is yet another novelty shown at Automatica 2014. At a total weight of only 1.8 kilogrammes, an overall length of 44 millimetres, and a maximum retract travel of 500 millimetres, the cost-effective module is ideally suited for smaller robots. The system reliably guides the 3D energy chain, while also preventing the formation of loops.

Complete cable product range for 3D applications
The CFROBOT cables from igus put the finishing touches on the construction kit principle for the robotic industry. The cable product range for difficult robotic applications ranges from hybrid and control cables to bus, data, and fibre-optic cables, creating a comprehensive assortment optimised for use in 3D energy chains with respect to the cable design. For cores, braided elements and shields are constantly exposed to significantly changing stresses in torsion applications. For this purpose, highly wear-resistant and halogen-free PUR or TPE jackets protect the torsion-optimised braiding elements against potential damage. The specialised designs guarantee that even fibre-optic cables work reliably in torsion applications. This was proven in tests with 27 million torsion movements. Deliveries are available starting at one metre without minimum order quantity or cutting charges.

"QuickRobot" supports quick online configuration
igus not only sells products optimised for the robotics industry, but also provides online tools, such as "QuickRobot", which is used to configure the entire equipment for 79 robot types immediately. By indicating the robot manufacturer and the type series, the complete matching equipment for up to a maximum of six axis is displayed within seconds. Ranging from large welding robots to small handling robots , this tool is capable of designing a wide range of applications.

igus presents maintenance-free systems for the packaging industry

igus presents a wide range of innovative products – ranging from food grade tribo tape to fully harnessed energy chain systems. These are specifically developed for the stringent demands of the industry.

"Manufacturers of packaging machinery rely upon high-performance components especially where products must be packaged in a time and energy-efficient manner", states Lars Braun, Head of Industry Management – Packaging Industry at igus GmbH. "Machinery has to be designed and manufactured within strict rules and regulations, whilst minimising associated costs, in order to do this we offer individual components as well as complete systems for drive technology.

Image PM1914-1
The tribo tape made from iglidur A160 materials can be bonded in a variety of ways, therefore allowing a wide range of options when designing sliding surfaces where low friction and wear is essential. (Source: igus GmbH)

Food grade: quality standards in accordance with FDA and EU Directives
The policy for food hygiene has been clearly defined by the standards of US and European regulators. At igus, most "food grade" products are produced in blue, and are therefore clearly identifiable. The world's first tribo tape made from proven iglidur A160 materials is suited for a wide range of applications due to its friction and wear values. Specifically, its maintenance free dry-running properties make it an ideal component for packaging machinery as a sliding surface where low friction is essential. Another example, and with an equally wide range of design freedom, iglidur A160 is also available as stock bar. Food-grade materials, iglidur A181 and iglidur A350 are used for even more specialised challenges, such as high temperature applications. Even for conveyor technology, the injection moulded knife-edge rollers from igus allow the complete avoidance of additional lubricants, whilst also providing better wear values when compared to PET-P versions.

Image PM1914-2

Complete drive systems
As a system manufacturer, igus also has developed a presence in drive technology. The drylin product range has evolved and is enhanced by the linear modules drylin SLW Protect and drylin SLWT-1080. drylin SLW Protect is designed for sensitive environments. The durable drylin W linear rail provides an effective protection mechanism that safeguards the lead screw and lead screw nut against impact from falling components and debris, This enhances its maintenance-free characteristics, a feature also shared by the drylin SLWT-1080. Our new linear unit is equipped with a twin lead screw, which allows separate control of the carriages. Various lead screw pitches can be combined, therefore providing maximum design and operating flexibility. The drylin E stepper motors also create new design possibilities. The compact design of the laterally mounted motor flange allows the motor to be mounted adjacent to the system, therefore reducing the overall system footprint. The new xiros ball bearings made from FDA compliant xirodur B180 material, combined with our aluminium guide rollers provide yet wider options for packaging system solutions, included within this are the cost-effective flanged ball bearings made from xirodur B180 (available in various diameters,) which also fall into the igus approach of consistently striving for improved solutions.

igus offers the full range of tested chainflex ROBOT cables from stock

The motion sequences in industrial production are becoming increasingly complex, so that special cables are increasingly required for torsional movements. For this purpose, igus has continuously expanded its chainflex CF ROBOT family: From hybrid and control cables to motor cables, bus, data and fibre optic cables, igus has a complete cable range for robots and three-dimensional movements from stock. Supplied from one metre in length and no minimum order size or cutting costs.

Damping elements and optimised shields compensate the torsions. Cores, stranded packages, shields and jacket materials are constantly exposed to highly fluctuating loads with torsions. The stable, highly glidable igus conductor structures are also supported by special damping elements. These damping elements give the cores the necessary freedom of movement.

Because, the more "turned back" the cable is, approaching the load limit, the more difficult it becomes for the cable to twist. Particularly high are the demands on the shields. igus brings various protection elements there: On the one hand, the design engineers place mechanical damping elements above and below the shield, so that the forces acting on the shield wires are not too large; on the other hand, special glide planes are incorporated under the outer jacket that will ensure the gliding of the cores among each other in the cable. Finally, the highly abrasion-resistant and halogen-free PUR or TPE jackets protect the torsion-optimised stranding elements against potential damage. This special structural design guarantees that even glass optical fibres function reliably in torsional applications. Tests have proved this with 27 million torsional movements.

igus standard tests: Guaranteed quality for CF ROBOT cables >>> Specific igus torsional standard tests are performed in order to evaluate the forces occurring in torsional movements: In our test lab all robotic cable types are fixed with a rotary- and fixed-point distance of one metre on both sides and twisted at a torsion angle of ± 180° at least three million times. The cables that are continuously monitored electrically with the automatic measuring system are then disassembled in order to evaluate any damage that may have potentially occurred to the non-measurable elements. Only cables that do not show any function damage after this igus torsional standard test are included in the chainflex CF ROBOT.
